Australia is set to see a dramatic rise in headhunting over the next 12 months as the battle to attract talent in the skills starved market intensifies.
The results of the 2008 Vedior Asia Pacific Employment Trends Survey reveal that headhunting is the third most common sourcing method in Australia, with 43% of organisations admitting to actively searching for desired candidates.
"Not only does this mean that Australian businesses will have to work harder to retain talented staff, but employers will also be forced to cast the recruitment net wider with headhunting occurring far more regularly," said Peter Tanner, MD of executive recruitment specialists, Tanner Menzies.
Tanner said there are a number of ways for businesses in Australia to increase their chances of seeking out suitable candidates:
- Profile your business: Get your business out in front of potential employees and build your employer brand. Try networking events, seminars, business chamber meetings, sponsorships and advertising;
- Make sure you remain the hunter, not the hunted: Be proactive when it comes to looking after your staff. Listen to their needs and ensure they are happy in the workplace - so they are less likely to be lured by your competitors and other job opportunities
- Do your research: Research a number of search firms to ensure you employ the right search consultant that is suited to your business and industry
- Prepare your offer carefully: Think about the employee your business needs and determine a suitable package based on the industry average and allow room for negotiations. Remember, your deal will most likely need to be sweeter than your competitors.
