The sheer number of Australian managers who lie on their resume is alarming, and is indeed three times higher than other workers new research has found.
Some 39% of Australian managers have lied or omitted details about their qualifications, consultancy firm SHL found. Reassuringly, it was also found that Australian workers are lying less on their resumes than two years ago.
However, the problem is not to be filed away just yet; 25% of workers have faked or embellished information on their resume with regard to experience, referees, earnings, age and qualifications.
“With the economy bouncing back in most sectors, job seekers seem more confident in their suitability for prospective roles. Employers, though, still need to be vigilant to identify those covering-up weaknesses in their resumes,” Stephanie Christopher from SHL said.
Christopher cited the example of disgraced Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson in adding that at no level should verification be overlooked. “An objective recruitment process is needed at every level to remove dishonest and unqualified candidates at the beginning of the hiring process,” Christopher said.
While it is relatively easy to confirm whether a candidate has completed a university degree, it is more difficult to assess less tangible attributes such as experience and skills, particularly with senior staff. “It’s alarming to see that managers are the worst offenders for misrepresenting themselves to employers, 18% have exaggerated or made up their level and range of experience,” Christopher said.
