NSW Government gives extra festive day off

The NSW Government has guaranteed a public holiday when Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day falls on a weekend in a bid to improve work-life balance.

The change – which will start in 2012 – was announced last week by Premier Kristina Keneally, and will be covered in legislation due to be introduced in parliament by the end of 2010.

"The changes protect the right of workers who elect to share the public holiday with their family and friends," she said in a statement.

Easter Sunday will also be recognised as a NSW public holiday from next year, and Anzac Day will be commemorated as a public holiday on April 25 only.
