A new initiative has been launched to bridge the gap between people who are available to work and employers who can’t find enough people to fill positions in agricultural production and the agribusiness industry.
The idea is the brainchild of Jeremy Lomman, managing director of the SOS Group, who says it’s time the agriculture industry got more creative about how it resources its future people-needs. “Educators, recruiters, employers and Government have been diagnosing the issue of workforce shortages in the industry for a long time now,” Lomman said. “The neglected element of these discussions has been the unheard-voice of the people that are actually available to work.”
His solution is a fairly simple one – he has created the National Skills Register for Australian Ag (NSR). It is a website which allows people who are looking for work in the agricultural production or the extended agribusiness industry to register their details online, and this can then be browsed by employers looking to fill gaps.
The NSR was created to give jobseekers and employers a combined voice and capture real market data about the actual size of the pool of skills and experience available to the agricultural production and extended agribusiness industry. “The feedback we receive will paint a picture about the level of current skills availability in the industry, where in the industry these skills are located and at what level,” Lomman said. “Once we have the facts, we can develop a way of effectively redeploying available skills and experience to where they are most needed.”
The ultimate goal of the project is to support regional growth by using a contemporary method to help the industry adjust its traditional approach towards human resourcing, whilst also supporting peoples’ search for work. Lomman anticipates the findings of the NSR will show that the true market for available skills and experience is not as tight as people think, and highlight some of the nuances regarding actual demand for people.
