No matter how much one may love their job, it can be tough to return to work after the Christmas and New Year’s break. A week or two off at the end of the year is for many the culmination of a year of slogging it out – and just when you’re feeling relaxed, just like that, it’s time to start the New Year.
Instead of indulging in yet another coffee and browsing celebrity gossip sites, here are 5 top tips to boost your energy at work and get back in the game.
1. Pin on a pedometer (a device that measures every step you take) and go for a quick walk on your lunch break. Aim to accumulate at least 10,000 steps during the day.
2. Use natural instead of fluorescent light at your desk. If that’s not possible at least go outside sometime during the day to get some sunlight, an often forgotten form of energy.
3. Switch up your office routine. Following the same schedule every day at work and doing the exact same thing as you did last year can be tedious. Take on a new task or approach a mundane one in a creative way. It will pick you up and help speed the day along a bit faster.
4 Get mobile. Standing up from your desk, stretching in the hallway or taking a quick excursion to visit a workplace pal will help refresh your brain and leave you feeling more energised. Moving around increases blood circulation and can help get those aches and pains out of your neck and back.
5. Stock your desk with energy-rich fruit snacks. Snacking on foods that raise your blood-sugar level gives you more energy. Stay well clear of potato chips or other junk food that may raise blood sugar, but are followed shortly afterward with a sugar crash.
