Employers urge workers to say when on last drinks

A new free online tool launched this week is aimed at making employees more aware of the impacts excessive drinking can have on their working life.

Say When is a drinking health check which can be promoted by employers as a way to support employees to develop healthier drinking patterns. Employers can request a poster to promote the tool and urge managers and employees alike to consider their drinking habits.

Developed by the Queensland University of Technology and launched by the Victorian state government, the tool encourages people to confidentially self-assess their own drinking habits and get a better sense of low-risk drinking. It shows users how their drinking compares with others’, and what effect alcohol is having on them. “Even if just one employee uses the tool to reassess their drinking and make a change, Say When has the potential to make a real difference to the productivity and competitiveness of businesses,” Victorian Minister for Mental Health Mary Wooldridge said.

The tool offers a safe, non-threatening way for people who wouldn’t regard themselves as having a problem with alcohol to see how their own drinking habits stack up and then make a change, if they think they need to. “It’s been carefully designed to be supportive and informative, without finger wagging or labelling people who – like most Australians – enjoy a drink,” Wooldridge said. “At the same time, it does give people the chance to make small changes to their drinking habits and lessen their risk of injury and developing serious health issues later,” she added.
