Retail employers have been warned about ‘unreasonable’ requests for employees to buy and wear clothing from the stores they represent.

When I was at University I worked casually in a gift store where we sold homewares and mid-range jewellery. We were not allowed to wear any jewellery that had not been purchased in the store, and even with a 30% discount on items, it was a huge burden having to "showcase" the stores' wares out of our own (very shallow) pockets. It made me mad, but I had to tow the line, and needed the job to pay the rent. It still makes me mad to this day to know they were taking advantage of us in that way. That store has since closed down. I guess that's karma...
