The Coalition’s popular Paid Parental Leave Scheme helped secure the election, but one expert is sceptical about its implementation.

    I agree there are many issues which affect the attraction, retention and advancement of women in the workforce and also that child care is a burning issue. However, paid parental leave should have a variety of economic, social and health objectives, including: Improving the health and welfare of mothers and babies;
    Tackling systemic obstacles to women’s workforce participation and financial security;
    Supporting both parents to bond with their babies, and,
    Enhancing gender equity (including access to parental leave for both men and women).The new scheme builds on past developments and has many positive features.
