Does Australia need a deadline to increase females on executive boards?

Rosemary Howard of AGSM is certain that if the non-compulsory attempts of the Australian government fail following a three year deadline, mandatory quotas for females on executive boards should be introduced

"20% female representation on boards and 10% on senior management ranks by 2014"

That''s hardly something to aim for. We''re talking about approx. 50% of the workforce and 60% of university graduates here. Women are not a minority, but a 10% senior management target assumes they are. Some of Australia''s biggest companies (Westpac, CBA, etc - and yes, finance is traditionally a male-dominated industry) have set targets at 40%.

    Australia can do better.
