Christmas and redundancies a volatile mix

If you’re about to commence, or in the midst of, rolling out redundancies in order to start 2013 with the right headcount, think again – it can lead to unwanted resignations.

    Too often businesses rush to complete their redundancy and restructuring programs before Christmas. Installing a premature deadline will result in the scaling back in the all important consultation process. Poor consultation, and importantly insufficient effort put into properly exploring redeployment options will result in industrial backlash and difficult to defend unfair dismissal claims.

    It is very important to inform and consult with staff as soon as decisions around change and redundancy are made - especially leading up to Christmas. But it is more important to allow proper and reasonable time for all of this to happen, rather than rush to a deadline. Sure, you may not exactly meet your budget target, but the costs associated with this will not be as great as those involved in defending industrial or unfair dismissal actions.
