Global giant BHP Billiton has predicted Australia’s resources industry will need an additional 170,000 workers if it is to meet the demands of the mining boom over the next five years.

Are mining companies making these opportunities available to alternate talent pools such as mature age workers? Many assume this audience has no interest in learning a new skill or trade, however it is quite the opposite. Now is the time to invest in training Australian's to fill these roles - there is plenty of time - and those over 40 should not be ignored. For every 1 new labour market entrant, there are 7 available over the age of 45. Employers need to start proactively advertising and recruiting specifically from this market and other neglected talent pools, before they look to skilled migration.
