How do you distinguish between Coaching and Mentoring?
There is much confusion about this, but in fact coaches do not mentor, whereas mentors may coach.
The issues for coaching that are common to most senior executives may be categorised as follows:
- Strategic – business consultants can assist here.
- Operational – again it may be appropriate to call in the consultants.
- Political – a confidant who personally knows the parties involved (maybe directors, partners or business contacts) can be of great value.
- Personal – someone who can focus on something specific that needs to be modified or changed is likely to be most suitable.
Where action is required on all fronts is where mentoring comes in.
Who might benefit from senior executive mentoring?
- Someone who has been promoted to the role of CEO for the first time, which can be lonely and calls on a broad set of leadership skills perhaps never before experienced
- Someone moving to a top role in a new organisation, industry, culture or environment
- Someone who needs to prepare for a step change that will take them to new territory requiring many questions to be asked and answered.
Who can help?
Merryck & Co. uses only experienced and successful CEOs as mentors – people who have been in such a role for at least five years – and who have been through a few ‘wars’ along the way. They help to maximise their clients’ self-awareness; to determine whether their clients are satisfying their own meaning and purpose in life; and to identify and explore the various options their clients may have in dealing with the professional and personal issues they are confronting.
